Jaibalito is a small native village nestled in Jaibalito Bay on Lake Atitlan. Jaibalito is one of 12 villages surrounding the lake in which the vast majority of the inhabitants are of Mayan descent. The population of Jaibalito is about 600 and most of the villagers are children.
The town is rich in Mayan
culture and tradition. The people of Jaibalito speak Kakchiquel but many
understand and speak Spanish as well. The women in this village and the
other surrounding villages wear their traditional "guipiles and cortes"
(tops and skirts) as they have for centuries. They are brightly colored
textiles decorated with intricate embroidery boasting a skillful craft.
The traditional garb and ancient language represent the Mayan roots intrinsic
in the small village of Jaibalito and offer visitors a wonderfully rich
cultural experience for which Guatemala is known.
