Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlan is an enchanted caldera lake a mile above sea level surrounded by three sleeping giants; the sacred volcanoes of San Pedro, Atitlan and Toliman. It is also one of the deepest lakes in the world. Its depth has not been calculated with exactitude, but is estimated to reach around 340 meters or 1115 feet. Atitlan is also a significantly large lake with 130 square kilometers of surface area.

Atitlan was formed by a volcanic explosion with a further collapse of 200 square kilometers of volcanic landscape, resulting in a boiling caldera that became extinct by cooling to form the bottom of the lake and growing volcanoes inside. A 300-meter cliff dominates the northern shore and eight volcanic masses emerge from the lake on its southern shore, creating the shallow bays of Santiago, San Lucas and San Juan. The lake has excellent water quality, reaching an average of 11 meters of water transparency.

Come experience for yourself why Atitlan is considered by many to be, in the words of Aldous Huxley, "the most beautiful lake in the world."

"Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing."
-Aldous Huxley-
